How do you politely handle a friend who goes on about people you don't know?

It sounds like this guy has no life and probably has absolutely nothing else to talk about. I know if I have nothing to say to people I start going on about my other friends to them, which is probably just as boring for them. It's just a habit when you have nothing else to say.
