Why do some people spell DUCHESS with a T?

As in, "dutchess." It's NOT the correct form of the spelling, so why are people doing it nowadays? I just noticed a CD that belonged to a friend of mine: "The Dutchess" by Fergie. Is this the new spelling or do people just like to spell the word incorrectly?
