Would a nuclear weapon stop a Meteor or Asteroid from Hitting The Earth?

Supposen a meteor or asteroid threatens the earth, would nuclear weapons, if launched at the asteroid or meteor help destroy it? If it will, would there be any atmospheric problems on earth and also in space due to toxic waste? I'm just curious, i really hope we don't get a meteor or asteroid threat.
